Father's Day Weekend in Granby Colorado!

Updated: Mar 6, 2023

We celebrated our main man this weekend with a weekend trip to Granby. Located in Grand County, holding a beautiful trio of Granby, Shadow Mountain, & Grand Lakes which are surrounded by the Arapahoe National Forest, the Arapaho National Recreation Area, and the Indian Peaks Wilderness. The town of Granby sits between two wilderness areas and just below the Continental Divide, an ideal area for families to hike, paddle board, and camp throughout the summer!

About an hour &1/2 from home, we discovered the Granby area years ago after a summer week's stay at Grand Lake. The area is away from busy roads, and seems more country than touristy. Its quiet & friendly with a marriage of breathtaking views of Mt Baldy, Indian Peaks, and so many other peaks we have yet to identify, and the lake trio.

Granby is home to a variety of stay options and we found a convenient Airbnb located in Granby Ranch, centrally located between Winter Park & Grand Lake. Granby Ranch is a convenient & fair priced community to call home for a couple days of exploring. It's an easy drive to Granby Lake, and about 20 min to the town of Grand Lake. With 5,000 acres, you could spend a weekend just enjoying the community; it supplies year round fun of golf, skiing, hiking, and biking.

We were anxious to get onto the water and kick off our paddle boarding season so we ventured out onto Granby Lake & found a spot in Kamloop Cove. This is a great place to set up for the day with little kids. The cove provides a little barrier from the motorized boats in the open water so we had mostly calm & clear water all afternoon. The kids safely waded in the water and Adam & I took turns paddle boarding with each of them while Teddy stayed cool under a big rock.

A few additional items we brought for a smooth afternoon of SUP adventuring with the kids:

  • Backpacks for each kid to keep extra clothes

  • Water shoes

  • Suits & towels

  • Sun protection gear like spf shirts

  • Water bottles for everyone even Teddy

  • Waterproof picnic blanket

  • Serape wrap blanket

  • *Tangle free fishing poles, and a bucket. (a must for next time)

Weekends away with young kids can be a balancing act and we mostly learn by trial and error. Our kids' attention span and their needs for different activities in short periods of time can be exhausting on top of already planned agendas.

We try to keep our vacation time loose to give space for the unexpected twists in our adventures! Its definitely not a perfect science and we have yet to vacation with no meltdowns but we've learned to build in time for special activities the kids love.

In Grand County ideal for small kids:

  • Visit the library & 📚 playground in Grand Lake

  • Get ice cream at one of Grand Lake's amazing ice cream shops

  • Have a picnic in Granby's picnic area

  • Take a time out and just throw rocks from any of the bays, into the water.

  • Take an easy hike such as Adams Falls or Monarch Lake Trail

  • Drive down to Winter Park for the alpine slide and a selection of eateries.

Being so close to this area, we'll definitely be back and we're looking forward to discovering additional activities and beautiful wonders of Grand County.
